Outreach and Professional Development Workshops

The Berryman Institute strives to meet the professional development needs of USDA Wildlife Services and the National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC). Workshops are available to all Wildlife Services and NWRC employees. The Berryman Institute provides all instruction and educational materials at no cost, but participants must arrange for and provide their own travel, lodging, and meals.

Chemical Immobilization and Euthanasia of Wildlife –
Recertification workshop

This 16-hour workshop is designed to meet the requirements for I&E recertification, not initial certification.  The workshop incorporates lecture, demonstrations, case studies, and group discussions.  The foundation of the course is a complex and ongoing animal-handling scenario that teams evaluate and discuss with the entire class.

Introduction to Geospatial Tools and Techniques: GIS and GPS

This course will help participants apply GIS and GPS technology to wildlife damage management problems and issues. This introductory course will encompass a broad scope of GIS and GPS functions relative to natural resource management, with an emphasis on wildlife damage issues.  No prior experience or knowledge with GIS or GPS is required, but basic computer skills are needed.

Advanced topics in Geospatial Tools and Techniques: GIS and GPS (**New Offering**)

This course will expand upon the Introduction to GIS and GPS course we have offered for several years.  Through lecture and project-based exercises, participants will learn more about topics such as integration of GIS and GPS data, management of spatial databases, geoprocessing, and other advanced topics.  This workshop will be based on participant needs and problems.  To attend this workshop, individuals should already possess a very good working knowledge of the basics of using GIS and GPS; we will not have time to provide a “refresher” of basic principles.

Riflery for Wildlife Professionals

This course will cover a number of topics relating to rifle equipment selection, set-up, maintenance, ballistics, and field applications in wildlife damage management.  The 3-day workshop incorporates a mix of classroom lecture, demonstration, discussion, and on-the-range shooting exercises.  Participants should have a good working knowledge of rifles and their uses in wildlife damage management.

Advanced Communication for Wildlife Professionals (**New Offering**)

This new workshop will introduce students to a variety of topics related to effective communication, including writing, public speaking, interpersonal communication, and public relations. The workshop will be heavily interactive with much time devoted to exercises, discussion, videos, and case studies. The workshop is designed for individuals already possessing good skills in writing, speaking, and interpersonal communication.
